Luis von Ahn, CEO of Duolingo, is once again facing criticism on social media after making another controversial statement involving artificial intelligence.

The entrepreneur had already been criticized previously after revealing his intention to turn Duolingo into an “AI-first” company, assigning artificial intelligence tasks that were formerly performed by humans.

Now, in a recent appearance on the No Priors podcast, he shared some controversial opinions on how he believes AI will impact the education system in the future.

“At the end of the day, I’m not sure there’s anything that computers can’t really teach you,” von Ahn explained, adding that “it’s much more scalable to teach with AI than with teachers.”

Despite that, he emphasized: “By the way, that doesn’t mean teachers will disappear; we still need people to care for students. I also don’t think schools will disappear, because we still need daycares.”

“[If] there’s one teacher and about 30 students, each teacher can’t give individual attention to every student. But the computer can. And in fact, the computer can… have very accurate knowledge of what this student is good at and what they’re bad at,” he added.

He was quickly bombarded with criticism on social media. “These tech guys have a real problem relating to actual humans,” one Reddit user stated.

“We need more teachers and fewer CEOs,” another argued. “Imagine what all the teachers he’s ever had thought when they heard this,” reflected a third commenter.
